How to Add and display an Animated Gif in your Tumblr

Many Tumblrs seem to have problems when they try to add, display and posting an animated gif, even when the size is small enough it appears to show up as a regular jpeg pic.  We found a couple of tricks that make sure your animated gif picture gets inserted and shows up correctly in your Tumblr.

I recommend you try the following  method to put and display an animated gif picture in your Tumblr blog.

How To Add an Animated Gif to your Tumblr.

Publishing a Photo/Text Post and Inserting an Image

Tumblr seems to have problems when handling animated gif that are “bigger than expected”, I’m not exactly talking about the size in memory but the actual width and height in pixels.  First of all, what you always must do is host the animated gif in an external hosting site, I personally recommend TinyPic.  This site never has problems when trying to display animated gif images.  Now, I suggest you use the Text Post Type instead of the photo one, I don’t know why but there are fewer issues when you put your animated gif this way.   One in the post click on insert image and paste the animted gif url that TinyPic gave you, click on insert and publish.

That’s it, if you are still having trouble getting your animated gif displayed this way leave us a message with the problem description.

When I post a gif, a gray box shows up. I click on it, but the eclipses just keep disappearing and appearing. Any way to fix that?

All you need to do is make sure the gif is 500px on the longest edge and less that 1mb. It will work everytime if those two elements are there.

Hey guys, this is great to know but I get a little gray box as the image when I put it as a text post. When I click on it, it’s fine but at first it’s just a little gray polaroid looking thing.

I have also attempted to upload it by tumblr video uploads, and through a link, and have spent hours earching on the internet.. I am sorry, being very stupid here but i would like to create more gifs but i cant! i made the gifs on photoshop, and have saved it as a gif, jpeg, and psd but nothing works…

It works when I use the text post method instead of the photo method, but when people reblog it, it has my name over it…it just doesnt look right. Is this the only option?

I’ve found that the best way to do this is to input the HTML code that TinyPic gives you into the code of the Text post.

Hey, thanks a million. It worked!!! I posted a 3.4mb gif. Another question – on chrome my tumblr page puts ‘Stuff I like’ & “People I Follow,” below my posts. On Safari it correctly displays them to the right of my posts. This problem only happens on my computer. Any ideas why?

I still just get grey boxes? They’re all under 500k and they have the correct measurements, is there any way to stop this happening?

For some reason (and this is before coming to your website), I have not been able to upload ANY gifs to Tumblr.

I always click on the “Photo” post at the top of the dashboard, then insert my gif (of which I’ve only tried to upload gifs that were not mine, so I can only edit their file size on TinyPic), add some tags, and hit upload. Once I do so, every time, it uploads as a simple jpeg image.

I tried using every url that was provided when converting my gif to a manageable file size, and only the link under the “Direct Link for Layouts” box worked. All of the other links I used came up with an ERROR message in the upload screen.

I’ve tried posting gifs as a “Text” post, but the animation again wouldn’t work.

I even tried using the embed code provided to upload the gif as a “Video” post, but that came up as an ERROR.

I found out the the maximum gif upload size on Tumblr of 200KB was recently changed to 500KB. Is this right? I can’t find the post I found it on, but I know that the sizing was increased. So then I realized that some of the gifs I was uploading were very much below the limit.

WHY IS THERE NO WAY TO UPLOAD GIFS TO TUMBLR!?!?

Trouble uploading a gif i made in gimp.
So i’ve searched how to put it on here several times and i’ve tried to just upload from my computer obvs it didn’t work cause it wasn’t small enough but i then tried using photobucket and getting the direct link then putting that into the url spot to upload and still it didn’t move when posted. I keep reading about an “insert” button, which i have seen in certain posts, but i don’t see it in the text post when i open new post. it just has an upload from computer button which also results in the gif not moving.
    HELP?!!

So when I try to upload it through the Text post on tumblr, when I go to upload picture it wants me to select a file from my computer, which doesn’t work as a gif. And when I copy paste in the links from Tinypic, it just shows the link and not the gif (granted it is kind of “big”) but I got it to work by uploading it as a video…. but I want to be able to put it in posts that don’t have the “respond with image” option or something and I’m lost…

So i tried what you said but still the same thing. The GIF gets posted and stays still as if it is just a regular JPEG image. the file is about 1.7M which is still smaller than what tumblr’s limit is, and I tried to do it from the Text box as well as the URL option in the photo upload. Any other suggestions? thanks

alright, so to make things easier, you need to upload the gif file into another image then just embed it to tumblr right?

Trying to post an animated gif with a title on top of it – i.e. combining the “text” and “photo” features. But when I upload using text, the gif isn’t animated, and when i link to it w/ photo, it doesn’t allow for a title…

It’s making me a bit mad, maybe you could help?

When you put it in the text box you have to use HTML.

It is a very simple img src = ” ” with around it.
