Display a Portrait Photo in your Tumblr description box

First lets remark that a portrait photo is not the same thing as your main user avatar, the last one being the thumbnail that is displayed both in your dashboard and the icon displayed when you are a follower (that also applies to your main tumblr blog).

Bear in Mind that each tumblr blog has its own Avatar/Portrait Photo

If you want to insert a profile picture within your description box on Tumblr, follow the tutorial below

How To Add an Avatar/Profile Picture To Your Tumblr Blog

  1. Upload your Portrait Photo/Avatar to your particular Tumblr Blog on Blog Settings >> Portrait Photo option. (each blog has its own portrait photo/avatar)
  2. Go to Customize Theme >> Edit HTML and paste the following code:

  3. <div><a href="/"><img src="{PortraitURL-128}" /></a></div>

  4. It’s not easy to tell you exactly where to paste the code, since each Tumblr Theme is different, but we suggest you look for the tag {description} and add the portrait photo code before or after it. Be careful, since this same tag could be surrounded by other p and div tags.
  5. Update Preview >> Save >> Close

If you want to display a smaller Avatar on Tumblr

You have different sizes available, just replace the one above with one of the code snippets below:

{PortraitURL-16}
{PortraitURL-24}
{PortraitURL-30}
{PortraitURL-40}
{PortraitURL-48}
{PortraitURL-64}
{PortraitURL-96}

    How do you change the size of the display picture? How come only the numbers that you posted are acceptable, whereas if I keyed in any random number in the link the picture disappears? The {PortraitURL-128} is still too small for me, I need it bigger. How do I achieve that?

    Thank you very much :)

    That’s the biggest you can get by using directly the avatar/portrait photo. Otherwise, you’d simply have to add an image to the description box.

    The avatar/profile picture that’s showing up is the default photo used for Tumblr. How can I get my own custom picture to show up?

    Mr. Tumblr Reply:

    In order to get a custom picture either in your description box, or any other part of your theme, paste the following code, and replace xxxx with the direct image url path:

    <img scr="xxxx"/>

    I used this link:

    And put it in front of my description tag like you said, but instead of going in my description, it goes into the left hand corner of my profile. Any way to fix it?

    I’ve tried to put it in front, after, and in other spots around the description without disturbing other p or div tags.

    Any help on how to get the picture in my description and not in the corner?

    I tried doing this and the picture is just fine except for the fact that it’s not positioned right. Like it covers my posts. And I tried doing a smaller version but that makes it too small. And One of my links still covers the small one. Please help?

    Is it possible to make the image bigger than that? Like maybe the size of a banner or something? Please let me know!

    Mr. Tumblr Reply:

    It is, simply modify the width and height properties of the image.
