How to Download Music from Tumblr

Though there are many Tumblr Music Widgets outthere that allow you to create a playlist and put it in your Tumblelog, sometimes you find individual tracks in a music post that you want to keep to listen to it later.  This tutorial tells you how to download music from Tumblr for free, and it only applies to tracks, songs and mp3s uploaded using Tumblr music player, also you must have the latest Firefox or Chrome version installed.

How to Customize your Tumblr Streampad.

1. Go to this page and choose Tumblr as your platform.
2. Scroll down until you see the title Customize It, it is there where you must choose the proper colors and controls to be displayed in the bottom of your Tumblr.
3. After this, scroll up and grab the code that you need to paste in your layout’s html.
4. Once in Tumblr, go to Customize >>> HTML and paste the script right before the closing head tag (</head>).

If you are wondering why you needed to get back to Streampad’s homepage to get a new Tumblr Streampad customized player, it’s simple, the script is always the same, but it takes advantage of cookies in your browser to remember the configuration.

I know that many Tumblrs really hate the idea of a music player set on autoplay, specially those that can’t be turned off.  I’ve even seen groups created to unfollow these people.  However, many of you keep asking how to do it so here is how to add background music playlists to Tumblr.

How To Have a Background Music Player Set on AutoPlay on Tumblr.

1. For the autoplay widget we are going to use Hypster.com , you need to first register with them.  Use the classic version of the site, since I can’t seem to find a way to get the embed code in site’s new version. You must also log in using the classic version.
2. Once you are logged in, you need to start creating your music playlist, or just add one song, this will always be your autoplay background music, and you need to come back to the site and edit the playlist if you want different songs to play.
3. Now it’s time to get the code, go to this link, I suggest you choose WordPress as the option for the widget code embedding.  You will get a code similar to the following;

4. The next step to have the background mp3 player is to strip a lot this code.  First, you must delete the <img tag until you see /> (right before <embed tag begins).  Then you need to delete the <a tag until </a>. Also, get rid of <br/> .  Finally, we must make some mods to the final code that is to be embedded as the background player for Tumblr. You can see that there are two pairs of width and height tags. You must change the values of the height tags to 15 in both cases.  Regarding the width tags, you can start by leaving them at 150, but that varies if you want to display the song title or not.  Never delete the px word after each value. Next, change the word newplayer for only player.  Finally, change the autoplay value to true, instead of false.
5. This is how it should like once the editing for the Tumblr autoplay background music player is done;

6. Go to your Tumblr and Customize >>> Theme >> Custom HTML and insert it where you consider appropiate, whether it is the header, sidebar, or footer, the higher the better since you are giving the visitor a chance to stop the autoplay.  Remember, the <body> tag indicates the beggining of your theme’s structure, it is in there where you have to place the code, not before.

Last but not least, read the following suggestions for inserting autoplay music on Tumblr;

• If you want to add the autoplay widget on an individual post you can do it using the html button located on the edition tools.  However, it wouldnt make sense since you want it to work on every single page/post of your Tumblelog.
• All music widgets are quite similar in their structure no matter what site they are from, just give it a try changing the width, height, autoplay parameters to see how it finally shows up

Tumblr’s music upload limit of 10mbs a day is simply not enough for those that only use Tumblr to post their music.  So an external hosting site is the solution/alternative that Tumblr actually gives you.

• Other sites:  Any other site that lets you host files can be a potential source to get an mp3 url and then stream it on Tumblr.  Most of them are not free though and once you exceed the bandwith transmission your account gets suspended.

How To Make a YouTube Audio Player For Tumblr.

1. Grab the code from the YouTube video clip you want to use to play music.  It looks like this:

2. You can see there are two strings of code that show both the width and height of the video player; width=”480″ height=”385 . We are only interested in the last one.
3. We must modify this line to make the YouTube Audio Player for Tumblr.  The value height will always be “25″ and the value width will be relative to your tumblr post layout.  In my case I chose “400″ but it could be as smaller though.
4. Now, paste and replace the the second line width=”480″ height=”385″ for width=”400″ height=”25″
5. Once in your publish screen, choose whatever type of post you feel like and paste the full youtube code in the html screen.  You can make this screen pop up by clicking on the html button that is located on your post toolbar.
6. You can not only paste this code into any type of posts, but also in your sidebar, header, or footer in your Tumblelog.

Here is a list with the best available (and free) Tumblr Music Widgets.  I chose this particular music hosting sites because you can actually choose from a wide range of artists and Tumblr doesn’t have limits as long as the music is hosted somewhere else.  You can add as many playlists as you want and make them play auto or not. This has nothing to do with audio posts, which actually have only a 10mb limit.

A List With The Best Tumblr Music Widgets.

Hypster: Hypster has become very popular among tumblr users, due to the availability of well known artists and mainstream songs, the only thing here is that you need to be registered to create the playlist.

GrooveShark: In my opinion this has to be the best Tumblr Music Widget, since it has all the features you look for:  All artists, all songs, endless playlists, customizable colors and size, autplay feature, etc. Go to grooveshark and get the code. (After you choose all the songs and make sure they play properly, there’s an option called Export at the left bottom of the screen, click there and it will take you to the widget edit screen)

BeeMP3: This music hosting site has a really broad range of songs to choose from, with the disadvantadge that you can only add 1 song at a time. Just search the song, artist, or album name, then grab the embed code.

StreamPAD: This site doesn’t host music but instead plays all your audio files that you uploaded to  Tumblr in a Chronological order. Go here to embed this tumblr music widget.
